Twin brothers have a one-of-a-kind experience during the state’s youth elk hunt last weekend. Follow the details on “Kentucky Afield” television this weekend, October 2 and 3.

Fourteen-year-old John McKenny of Mt. Eden was one of five youngsters drawn to participate in this year’s youth elk hunt. Of course, the hunting party wouldn’t be complete without his brother, Ben.

Host Tim Farmer follows these young hunters into the mountains of the Paul Van Booven Wildlife Management Area in Breathitt County, and finds they do more than finish each other’s sentences. They finish the day with a magnificent bull elk.

Also on the show, man’s best friends demonstrate their expert training. Clifford Romain with the Central Kentucky Hunting Retriever Association gets us close to the action as specially bred dogs compete for titles in three distinct categories. The competition takes place in Shelby County.

“Kentucky Afield” is a production of the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. It is the longest continuously running outdoor television show in the nation. The program airs at 8:30 p.m. Eastern /7:30 p.m. Central Saturdays, and repeats at 4 p.m. Eastern/3 p.m. Central Sundays on KET 1.
