Deer and Elk harvest in northwest Montana is lagging behind last year’s totals at most Region One check stations.

At the six check stations through Sunday, November 8, a total of 11,136 hunters checked 481 white-tailed deer, 80 mule deer, and 101 elk for a 5.9 percent rate of hunters with game. This compares to a 6.5 percent rate of hunters with game last year.   Overall, the harvest of whitetails and mule deer is down from last year, while the elk harvest is above last year’s count.   The counts at the six northwest Montana check stations represent a sampling of the harvest and do not represent the complete number of animals taken.

Hunters have now taken 26 wolves in Wolf Management Unit 1, which encompasses all of northwest Montana’s Region One, along with small portions of FWP Regions Two and Four.   The quota for WMU 1 is 41 wolves.

Hunters are reminded that it is now buck-only for whitetails in northwest Montana. Antlerless whitetails remain legal game for youth 12-15 years of age and disabled hunters with the Permit to Hunt from a Vehicle.   Mule deer are buck-only for the entire season.   Hunters should refer to the hunting regulations for the hunting district they plan to hunt.
