CHEYENNE-- The Rawlins Chapter of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation (RMEF) has been selected by Field and Stream Magazine as the Conservation Chapter of the Year for the RMEF. Field and Stream honored the chapter as part of their Heroes of Conservation awards program for 2008.
The Chapter will receive $1,000 from the sponsor, Toyota Motor Sales, and will be featured in the October issue of Field and Stream magazine and on the Field and Stream online television show www.FieldandStrream.com/heroes.
"The Rawlins Chapter is more than a fundraising chapter, its members are out there on the ground getting their hands dirty. Our editors loved that," said Brian McClintock of Field and Stream.
Conservation projects undertaken by the Rawlins Chapter have improved habitat in a number of locations across southwest Wyoming. These include Green Mountain, the Little Snake River and the Red Desert. Installing guzzlers for elk and other wildlife, fencing around springs to conserve riparian areas, fencing around aspen regeneration to enhance habitat, thinning conifer stands on aspen regeneration projects and removing old barbwire fencing are some of the projects undertaken by the chapter.
The chapter has coordinated their efforts with the Wyoming Game and Fish Department, Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Forest Service, the Little Snake River Conservation District and EnCana Oil and Gas USA.
The Rawlins chapter will be honored at the Heroes of Conservation Awards Gala, Sept. 25 at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City in which the Secretary of the Interior Dick Kempthorne and Director of the U.S. Fish Wildlife Service, H. Dale Hall will be featured.
